NEXT UP AT GRAYSHOTT FOLK CLUB:

Friday 29th November 2024 @ 7.30pm

BELLA HARDY (with Jenn Butterworth)

Bella Hardy has been at the centre of the British Folk scene, since she was a young girl when she made early appearances at the Cambridge and Sidmouth Folk Festivals. As a self-taught "fiddle singer", she has beguiled audiences all over the World and as well as learning the tradition, she has absorbed musical influences from her travels abroad.

Bella is a singer songwriter with a gift for storytelling who has earned her reputation as a boundary-pushing artist and whose work continues to evolve while staying deeply rooted in the traditions that shaped her.

On this tour, audiences can expect a show that spans her remarkable career and hear songs such as:

"The Herring Girl":

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RV0iFbF29rI

as well as her more recently released material.                              Here is a single from February 2024, called:

"Shepherds AreThe Cleverest Lads":

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCEhQ694VJs

Speaking about this tour, Bella says:

"There'something magical about performing live, where the songs can grow and change each night, depending upon the energy in the room. I'll be performing a collection of songs very close to my heart, and there's nothing like the energy of a live show to bring them to life"

We know that our Grayshott audience will be right behind her.

For anyone who has seen Bella live, it's clear that she's an artist who knows how to captivate an audience. Her voice-at once powerful and delicate-has a way of drawing listeners in, making each performance feel like a conversation between old friends.

For the first time, Bella is thrilled to be accompanied by good friend and award-winning guitarist Jenn Butterworth which will make this tour, something truly special.

With the ability to conjure and twist stories that call straight to the heart, Bella's themes of displacement and home, lost and found, heartache and joy, are delivered with her unique, disarming honesty, and, of course, the acclaimed crystalline voice that won her the BBC Radio 2 Folk Singer of the Year Award in 2014.

Grayshott Folk Club's "Christmas Special"

with:

MELROSE QUARTET

After several attempts to make this gig happen, we think we are finally there!

Melrose Quartet will be jetting to us directly from the Costa Folk Festival, in the exotic location of..........................Hayling Island,

where they will be appearing amongst a stellar line up of Folk's finest.

These four top Folk musicians will come together at Grayshott, to perform their joyfest which they call:

"A Bright New Year".

It will mostly be based upon their seasonal album entitled:       "The Rudolf Varaiations", which features a range of songs from Traditional Carols to Contemporary Wassails.

This will be a fun evening of songs, dressing up, prizes, lots of choruses to join in with and an award for the most memorable Christmas Jumper..............But if past experience is anything to go by, the bar has been set very high.

Featuring:

Nancy Kerr (Voice/Fiddle).

Nancy has won more BBC Radio 2 Folk (and Spiral Earth) Awards than you could shake a stick at; as a solo performer, in a duo with her partner James Fagan and also as a member of Full English.

Nancy is the go to Fiddle player for many collaborative enterprises, including: The Magpie Arc, The Transports, The Sweet Visitor Band and many more besides.

James Fagan (Voice, Irish Bouzouki, Guitar).

In 1995, James brought many Folk songs over from his native Australia on a short tour of the UK with his family band, The Fagans.........and stayed. Since partnering up with Nancy, he has won many musical awards with her, including BBC Radio 2 Folk Award for Best Duo in 2003 and 2011.

James is also a well-established DJ on Sheffield Live Radio and hosts the weekly programme, "Thank Goodness, It's Folk".

Jess Arrowsmith (Voice, Fiddle)

Formerly of the band Crucible, Jess performs with her husband Richard in a duo, with Ceilidh bands and as a member of Arrowsmith:Robb (with veteran Canadian Folk musician, Ian Robb).

and

Richard Arrowsmith (Voice, Melodeon)

Richard is another highly sought-after musician, playing in a duo with wife Jess, in Hekety, a Ceilidh band and metal/ceilidh band, Glorystrokes.

Together, these four musicians play at the top level of British Folk music and are sure to give us just the kind of evening that will set us all up for Christmas and get us in the Chrismas spirit.

SHOWMAN & COOLE (on tour from Canada)

Two-thirds of The Lonesome Ace Band (Chris Coole/Banjo and John Showman/Fiddle) bring their joyous and captivating music to Grayshott Folk Club.

John Showman is an exceptional Fiddle player, whilst Chris Coole is an amazing Banjo player. With many years of experience playing together in bands such as The Lonesome Ace String Band, these guys have a telepathetic musical connection and will bring grit, skill and abandon to Americana, music, bridging old-time Bluegrass and Folk traditions into a seamless hybrid of original material that is at once fresh and timeless.

Announcement soon......................

--------------------------------------------

Between March 2020 and June 2021, the Covid pandemic meant that events were beyond our control and whilst we had to postpone a dozen gigs or more during that time, we are proud to say that we still managed to put on some socially-distanced, limited capacity shows and witnessed some memorable musical performances between lock downs, by the following musicians:

A little bit of Grayshott Folk Club history:

Grayshott Folk Club went live with our first ever gig on

22nd January 2011. The main aim of Grayshott Folk Club is to bring "quality live music at affordable prices " to Grayshott, which is a village near HINDHEAD in South-West Surrey but Grayshott Village Hall itself, is actually situated just inside the Hampshire border by about 50 yards and is officially the biggest village hall in the whole of Hampshire.

We mostly host Folk bands/musicians and our past guests have included;

Altan, Bob Fox, Acoustic Strawbs,

Ashley Hutchings/Blair Dunlop/Becky Mills, Belshazzar's Feast, Breabach, Coig, Jez Lowe & The Bad Pennies, Jon Wilks,

Katherine Priddy, Lau, Merry Hell, O'Hooley & Tidow,

Sam Carter/Sam Sweeney, Sam Kelly/Jamie Francis,

St. Agnes' Fountain,

SilverBlues

(Ric Sanders, Ray Jackson, Vo Fletcher and Tom Leary),

Steve Wickham (The Waterboys) & Ray Coen,The Bully Wee Band, The Churchfitters, The Young 'Uns and Tide Lines, amongst many others.

We occasionally stray off-piste with a little bit of live Americana/Pop/Rock/Prog Rock music and

Caravan, Colin Blunstone & Band, James Yorkston/Nina Persson, Jarrod Dickenson, Joe Topping & Scott Poley, Linda Lewis, Mike d'Abo, Police Dog Hogan,

The Christians and The Leisure Society

have all played for us since we started out.

Basically, we do whatever we can, to keep it live, keep it local and to keep hungry musicians off our streets......

Our first choice venue is:

Grayshott Village Hall,

Headley Road,

Grayshott,

Nr. HINDHEAD,

Surrey GU26 6TZ

and from time to time, we also use

St. Alban's Church, Tilford Road,

HINDHEAD, Surrey GU26 6RB

as venues to host our live music events.

If you wish to buy tickets for our gigs, you can buy them in person from:

Grayshott Post Office, Crossways Road, Grayshott GU26 6HJ

Alternatively, you can call Des O'Byrne on 01428 607096
